A List of Things I Would Like To Do

Since I’ve been really busy recently and incredibly stressed, I thought I’d make a list of things I WANT to do instead of things I HAVE to do. Wow I sound whiny/bitchy. (y/n? I’ve noticed people using that a lot these days) This will be a short list, because I don’t…want…I’m tired…

1. Collect all of my worldly possessions from my room and move them downstairs into a guestroom so that I can get to work painting it. This is not so much an enjoyable activity, but I really need to do this, and I’m sure once the room is painted it will look so gorgeous and lovely that I can’t help feeling good.

2. Upload some things to deviantart. I get grouchy when I can’t draw anything meaningless and fun once in a while. Right now I can either work on my novel or not draw at all, because if I’m not working on my novel I feel guilty. The only problem is I get really good ideas about lots of things, but I can’t put them on paper because of the whole guilt thing. So it just leaves me doing next to no drawing at all.

3. Paint my nails blue. I know it sounds silly, but I like it when my hands look pretty. My nails get dirty way too fast and they make me uncomfortable and sad. Be cleen, nails! Please? Anyway if I cover them with shiny blue nailpaint they will not appear dirty and I can gain some self-confidence back.

Fin! I hope this will make me feel better. I must have more free time than I realize, but I still feel like I’m being crammed in a small box. Goodnight.

Yay Stem Cells

  • Alice: I don't want to research stem cells. Tell me about them.

Ahah! Not so pretty now, is it? This is the first page of rough sketches. If you can decipher what the story is/what anyone is saying, you get a gold star. (ps. I can barely understand it meself, it’s okay)

The very first page ever! This is one of the nice finished sketches, but the majority of the dummy I’m making up will be crappy rough sketches that are about a fourth the size. Hooray!

It’s Scanning Day! Progress = 6/a lot

Sorry I haven’t updated my work so far. A certain someone was complaining.

Okay so I’ve been working for the past week or so to get to the point where I can create a dummy of the entire graphic novel with my sketches. Well hooray because that day has rolled around! Currently I’m sitting here listening to Ratatat while my scanner hums away (it sounds kind of like an angry bee. robot bee?). I had a lot of false starts with the scanner - for some reason, it thought that since I chose “letter size”, I only wanted half of the page to be scanned every time. Noob.

Gonna post the first few pages for you all to enjoy. Enjoy!

A sweet picture by Shinerai that I love - it’s simple, but very nice. Plus I love the fluffiness.

FACEDESK

On the brilliant suggestion of my sister, I’ve decided to post updates to my grand Graphic Novel Project as I work on it during this winter month of January. So: post number one (even though technically the project beginning date hasn’t yet hit me over the head).

I spent most of today cleaning up my room, which is going to be my studio for the next four weeks. There is now a giant-size H&M bag sitting in there FULL of trash. Most of it is old homework, but there’s a fair number of sketches and test papers and loose-leaf doodles. And clothing tags. Anyway it made me realize that I don’t really have much time to do this project, but I really wanna get it done RIGHT.

…Which may or may not happen. I think that I’m a little too idealistic, and I’ve set my sights too high. I thought that I would be working productively and smoothly throughout all of winter break…but I really haven’t, and even now I’m writing a blog post instead of working. Yikes.

In my defense, though, I’m worried about getting the look that I want, and I’m also worried that I’m not yet skilled enough to do this project. I have this vague idea that artists know exactly how the skeleton is put together, so that they can easily visualize and draw it from any angle in any complicated position. I don’t really do that though - I sketch things until they look good enough to fool the layman’s eye and that’s all. Unfortunately, I think that knowledge is something you really need to take on creating an entire graphic novel. Which means, in other words: I’M FUCKED.

But, on a better note, here’s a compliation of my favorite artists that I hope have had some influence over my style, because I love their work so much.

  • Deviantartist Klar (http://klar.deviantart.com/) has my admiration for incredible drawing skill and also for being a WoW player. Klar uses color beautifully and her (his?) people have the most interesting faces and bodies.
  • Deviantartist Shinerai (http://shinerai.deviantart.com/) draws/digitally paints mainly dragons, but they’re incredible looking dragons. I ADORE how he uses color and effect to make his pieces jewel-bright.
  • Deviantartist Loish (http://loish.deviantart.com) crafts really interesting pieces with her sometimes gremlin-like people with fascinating facial expressions. I love her use of color and line.
  • And finally, Deviantartist HoboRiss (http://hoboriss.deviantart.com) because her characters are always very grounded in space. She has a unique way of making faces and her line is always interesting. Plus this one time she wrote on my deviantwall. It was neat!

And that’s the end, at least for now. I could write up a huge list of all my other influences, but I think I should keep it short and sweet. Plus I want to get a little drawing done tonight…even though it is getting late. ARGH.
